TIM GODWIN

Tim started his career as a performer touring the U.K and North America with The National Youth Music Theatre. He created the role of ‘The Man’ in Richard Taylor’s ‘Whistle Down The Wind’ at The Edinburgh festival and played numerous roles in ‘The Ragged Child’, before discovering that he was too old to audition for Youth Theatre anymore! So he started to audition professionally, quickly getting roles in regional shows and T.V. Whilst he was working as an actor, Tim decided that he wanted to go to University, and with some wrangling and pleading, he was able to combine acting work with Academic life at Middlesex University. Somehow he managed to study for a degree whilst performing in The Olivier nominated ‘La Traviata’ at The Donmar Warehouse, play ’Dickon’ in ‘The Secret Garden’ at The Watermill Theatre and waltz with Dame Judy Dench in Sondheim’s ‘A Little Night Music’ at The Royal National Theatre! He graduated in 1996 with a BA (hons) in Performing Arts and a wealth of professional experience. During the next five years Tim worked continuously as a performer at he highest level, and in 1997 started his relationship with Les Miserables, which has lasted on and off for eight years! During this time he has performed many of the Ensemble roles, as well as playing Jean Valjean on many occasions, including the 8000th performance and the shows 19th Anniversary gala peformance!

However, whilst he was performing, Tim was also developing his role as a freelance Theatre practitioner in Schools and Youth groups around the country, directing, writing and enabling Theatre projects with young people. This led him to The Central School of Speech and Drama, where he trained as a teacher so that he was able to work in formal education. Having qualified, Tim worked for three years, as Head of Theatre Studies at the prestigious Performing Arts College, Tiffin School, Kingston, where he was able to develop his skills as a facilitator, developing new ways of exploring Theatre with young people.

On leaving Tiffin, Tim worked freelance throughout the country, sharing his skills and vision with a range of different company’s. He directed The York special needs project for Opera North, integrating mainstream and special needs students in a new piece of Music Theatre by Richard Taylor. He went on to direct the outreach project for English Pocket Opera’s production of ‘Il Pagliacco’, working with schools throughout London and leading to performances at The Greenwich Theatre. He continued his relationship with The National Youth Music Theatre, directing projects throughout the U.K and developing ‘Spider Dance’ in Scarborough with 50 young people, as part of ‘The Generator’ programme. He also continued to run workshops for Greenwich Music Theatre Academy, The Mousetrap Foundation, The National Association of Youth Theatres, The Theatre Museum, The Orpheus Centre (where he devised a piece performed at The Royal Opera House) and Kingston University

In 2004 Tim decided to return to combine his education work with performing and was very happy to be invited to return to the 20th anniversary cast of ‘Les Miserables’.

He is currently working full time as Artistic Director of THRIFT, and has finally hung up his acting boots to focus on his vision as a Theatre Director and educationalist.

Tim is married to Carmen and they live in West Berkshire with their two daughters, Ffion and Lucy.
